The founder of SPLM/A Dr John Garang was absolutely brilliant in manipulating each tribe against the other ceasing on the tribal rivalry and also at some point in time employing tribes very own son to coerce their tribes into join the armed rebellion in order to have the man power to wage the arm struggle. This practice also has encourages fierce competition for position because people begin to have the perceptual notion of military rank as a way to privileged elite classes within the society. Even soldiers and commander committed horrific crime against humanity because with weapon in their hand instead of being view as a liberator by the masses the instead became the oppressors. In the 1980s as the loosely rebellion begin to establish chain of command. they work tireless to build up the rag tag guerilla movement from the ground up organizing it political wing to run it propaganda campaign and recruitment. SPLM/A has a abysmal human right record. since its inception most of those in leadership position now and those that have decease have committed heinous crime unimaginable in South Sudan. The employee barbaric tactic of child soldier for recruitment; however at the onset the movement chairmen Dr John Garang did his homework he told those in higher command to go to their home land to talk to their tribal chief to conscript male children to be taken to school in Ethiopia so many kids were taken away from their parents a huge number of them lost their life through the infamous exoduses from South Sudan to Ethiopia on foot. Most of this children where 5 years of age to 18 years old. When the children reach Ethiopia there wasn't school like the chairman had promise. These children were organize in kind of military formation like the Hilter youth instilling militaristic mindset so the became recruiting farm. As the war intensify the use of Child soldier became the norm in the movement even update I can not claim it has change because I was there from its infancy until I left in 1992. When the fighting intensify the sector of operation were breakdown into zonal area of command manning by Lt colonel at the helm as the zonal commander. these zonal commander had so much autonomous granted to them they can kill anyone at their own discretion no question ask. Most of the current leadership occupying the top post in the government of South Sudan had murder or betray so many of their fellow comrade some time because fierce rivalry for position, tribal affiliation or just to save their own skin from whatever case the happen to be.
During the arm struggle death by firing squad was the norm any mistake made by individual be it’s the slices carry a huge penalty. if one happen to find himself in the wrong hand for instance if the area commander happen to be from rivalry tribe. So many outstanding men and women perish in the hand of their fellow brother due to this negligent and poor leadership no one dare investigate how and why let alone court martial anyone for the wrongdoing.
At the time as the conflict was wreak havoc the whole region rumors and deception where becoming a parcel institutional principle within the movement the most famous one would be during the 1991 internal split with in the movement. Even though the fellow were just trying sparked a sincere civil discourse on what it that the people of South Sudan are fighting for? Last one would be the 2004 rumor which nearly rift SPLM/A apart again when the current South Sudan accidental president Salva Kiir heard the word on the street that Dr. John Garang is working on removing him from hierarchy of being the second man in command. This rumor set up unprecedented bad blood between him and his longtime commandant. The evident to this crises can be found in Minutes of historical SPLM meeting in Rumbek 2004 at this meeting the whole dirty laundry of the Marxist-Lenin movement rant out for all to see.
The current unfortunate crises which is unfolding today in South Sudan is just the same old animosity, bigotry, and tribal rivalry resurfacing itself; because its was not manage well due to visionless leadership occupying the helm.
